When you’re in a conference call or meeting, shut down your laptop and turn off your phone. You don’t want to be asked a question and realize you just haven’t been paying full attention. Don’t just go through the motions. Stay fully engaged. While it may be tough to disconnect, give it a try. You might be amazed at how much more productive you are in meetings if you give them your complete attention.
Ignore your inbox
While you’re expected to be responsive, you don’t have to respond to most emails immediately. Set up some communication-free times where you can dedicate an hour or 90 minutes to real work. Then spend maybe a half an hour responding to the really critical e-mails. You can tackle the rest later–maybe even after work.
Write it all down
Any time a to-do or idea occurs to you, write it down immediately. You may be having so many back-to-back meetings that you tend to forget the critical thoughts and ideas that you’ve had throughout the day.
Take a break
While many people don’t think of this, one of the tenants of better productivity is to make time to do something you actually enjoy. You might read industry- or sports-related articles, do yoga, take an exercise class or leave just a little bit early so you can eat dinner with your family. It’s just really important to make time to recharge so that you’re ready to work on your to-do list again tomorrow.
Find a system
These tips may help but the most important thing is to find and stick to a system that works for you. Also, always remember that you should be fully engaged in whatever it is that you’re doing, whether it’s a client meeting, a project or a conference call.
